Desmanthus illinoensis is a common plant in many areas of the south central and Midwestern US. It can often be found growing on the sides of roads, needing full sun and ample moisture during its short growing season.

USDA Zones 5-8 are recommended for outside cultivation.

The Land Institute in Salina Kansas has done extensive research into the food uses of the seeds of this plant.


Re-seeding Native American perennial, zones 5-8. Grows easily from seed fixates nitrogen to improve soil. Fern-like foilage, white flowers. Seed pods curve to form clusters in late summer. There is no mistaking the interesting spider bean pod. Pod bundles are a favorite addition to dried flower arrangementne. Best to start in nursery pots & transplant when first true leaves appears.


Nutrotous range wildflower food. Used medically by native Omaha & ponca children called it rattle plant imitating dance rituals of adults. Pawnees used the boiled plant leaf water to releve itching.
